The First Idea

designaday:

Very often, upon asking for my input on a function’s UI, a developer will say, “That makes a lot of sense. I never would have thought of doing it that way.” It’s not that I’m smarter, but that my design training has taught me to ask questions and approach the problem from several different angles before settling on a solution.

One of the reasons that UIs designed by developers are typically so poor is that they implement their first idea about a function’s behavior and visual representation. One must realize that the first idea is only the first idea. Sometimes it may end up being the best idea, but more often than not, better solutions exist—they just require some iterative thinking.

I think this basically describes the design process as part of the [shudder] innovation framework for companies - it isn’t about questioning the deliverable but poking around the construction and understanding the thought process behind the deliverable. As with any thing, often an objective view is the best way to take a step back and get a better result.

We moved from thinking of ourselves as designers to thinking of ourselves as design thinkers. We have a methodology that enables us to come up with a solution that nobody has before.
We call this process “design to value.” It’s a far cry from “design to cost,” the typical approach used to make cars, in which a final price is set and the new car is then engineered to be sold profitably at that price; the concept of how consumers perceive value does not really enter into the equation.
